Farmer Brown's Market Garden
We grow using an intensive no-till system. This means we do not use a tractor to plow or till our fields. We leave the soil undisturbed; allowing beneficial microbial life to establish populations in our soil.
We do not use synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides.
We manage insects through the use of insect netting and a form of integrated pest management. Integrated pest management means we bring natural predators onto the farm or create an environment for predators to have the upper hand on various pests. This is done by bringing in predatory insects such as ladybugs and green lacewings as well as adding predatory nematodes to the soil. Wild hawks are also a form of pest control for us. We often have kestrels and red-tailed hawks flying around the property. In order to allow them to be more successful at reducing our pest population, we keep a buffer zone of short grass around our growing areas and try to minimize the hiding areas for various pests.
